Aboard 1971-72
I was aboard the Tomcat for the WESTPAC cruise when we had the marines and seals aboard in 71 (and the Mindoro Phiblex) and for the 1972 liberty cruise (I was SHORT) when we had a flight deck full of tractors and farm equipment for a state department visit to Colombo, Ceylon. We had Seabee equipment in the well deck for construction of the base at Diego Garcia. We visited Tauranga, New Zealand, Sydney and Freemantle Australia, among other ports. Lots of fun and more liberty than money. On the return trip, I got off at Subic and flew back to process out at Treasure Island. Very SHORT!!!

To Chuck Stroud,
I was in A gang on the Thomaston from 3/74 thru 10/77.
Sorry I don't remember you but I do remember Keith Due.
He came on board about a yr before I left, I think. Maybe in 1976?
I stumbled onto this site and it's always good to hear about those times on the boat. It was a long time ago.
I suppose you came on board when the ship was in the Todd yard in Seattle. If I recall, we were living on that barge that was set up as housing. What I remember about that time was the free bus to the mariners games that summer (77) and getting into the cheap seats for something like a dollar.

RADM. John M. Tierney- former CO USS Thomaston

My Dad was a former C.O. of USS Thomaston. He truly loved his tour on Thomaston, felt he learned so much, and considered it one of the highlights of his life. I wanted to let you know he passed away on Sept. 15, 2016 in Virginia Beach, and I know he was looking down at your reunion and there in spirit. He was so proud of his crew and I wanted everyone from his era, 1968-69 or 70 to know about his passing and how proud he was of you.

My family has fond memories of our time on the ship and we salute your service. Burial will be at Arlington at a later date.

Update:
Rear Admiral JOHN M. TIERNEY U.S. Navy (Ret.)

RADM John Mark Tierney USN (Ret.) passed away in Virginia Beach, VA, on Sepember 15, 2016. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, VA with internment at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

The reunion is fast approaching and their are only 5 rooms left in our block of 50 so for those of you that have waited "Good Luck" and the rest of the hotel is full, it's fleet week. Every year we try and get people to make reservations early but a whole lot don't listen so maybe this will get some attention.

The good news is that we have a lot of people this year. If you have a problem getting a room at the hotel, ask about a 'overflow hotel' that is close by. The rate should be about the same. Thanks and I hope to see you there ! Randy Bundschuh

Hi All you Thomaston "Tommy Tinker Toy" crew! I reported onboard October 77. Remember Todd Shipyard Seattle? With Strawberry, Raspberry, Cheese, and a bunch of other great guys. Rode on first WestPac after dry dock, fall of 79. Swapped duty with another signalman from the Blue Ridge who wanted to return to San Diego, Nick Arvanitus...? I stayed on "Flagship" WestPac and became an Illustrator Draftsman, but my heart would always be with the amphibs and the tomcat!

Sad news, we lost our shipmate Charlie Chadwell on Aug 17, 2015. Charlie served on the Thomaston from 58-60 as a FMBT and came back to the Thomaston in 74-77 as a BT Chief. He started his career on the Thomaston and finished it there. Charlie lived in Florida and belonged to the local LSD club.

Our condolence for all friends and family of Charlie. Rest in peace Charlie...

Hello long lost shipmates of the old grey boat known as the Tommy "T". Had to write this as I just happened to look at the website and saw the message Jim Sides wrote. Sad to say it but he is not alone as far as the hearing loss is concerned. The engine room and especially the wargames of August 1974, one month before being discharged did damage to my hearing. Have some great memories of my time on board. But the best is The Inaugeral Second Saturday Music Festival held on the flight deck. For two days the freaks & the rednecks set aside their differences and enjoyed the music & festivities. Life is pretty good these days being alive instead of the alternative! Peace be with all Thomaston shipmates!

All is well, except for an unexpected Thomaston souvenir: significant hearing loss from serving in forward/aft engine rooms from 7/71 to 8/74 with zero hearing provided.
