Served aboard her 73-75, first came aboard in Okinawa running from a hurricane! The top bunk wasn’t the best place to sleep in rough waters 😂. Made some good friends. We were in Vietnam for Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. Ron Perry, Chino, Fly… great guys!

Just wanted to let anyone who was on the '79-'80 deployment when the ship was in Enewetok Atoll for part of the clean up from the nuke testing that the passage of the PACT legislation has directed the VA to provide disability benefits for veterans (and surviving dependents) who served in specific areas where they were exposed to various chemicals and hazardous materials. Most of the info put out by the various veteran service groups is directed toward Agent Orange exposure, but the work on clean up of Enewetok is also specifically cited.

Hello Thomaston Shipmates,
On this day 50 years ago,January 27 1973,the Signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord took place. The next day,28th,the U.S.-Vietnam Cease Fire went into effect. The Thomasten, shortly thereafter, was called up for evacuation duties. Job Well Done!

No more BT in the Navy, is that wild or what.
Anyway aboard USS Thomaston from 1980-1984 with three West Pac's. First one was the best - Loved Australia even though we we were on the edge of the Typhoon and walking on walls. Would love to hear from some of the shipmates. Take Care all.

Wrong number posted in last one...sorry:)

Good morning all! I am trying to connect with anyone who served on the USS Thomaston in 1981. I have contacted the FB page and have posted my inquiry there also. I have a friend who was a Vietnamese refugee on one of the boats the Thomaston rescued in April 1981. He was 13 at the time. He has been unsuccessful in his search for information about that time, so I thought I would help. He especially remembers the Captain. He has wanted to connect and thank those who saved them. I am putting together stories, photos, anything really that I can find in a memory book for him and his family. Please contact me if you have anything you are willing to share.

I was attached to 1st Division in 1983 and 84. Went on her last WESTPAC before decommissioning. I am looking forward to finally getting to get to a reunion. I've worked in the music industry for the last 30 years and never could seem to get the time off I needed. Maybe now.

Hello Thomaston shipmates. I hope this finds everyone doing well.
According to my DAV calendar, yesterday, January 27th, (1973), was the 49th anniversary of the signing of the "Vietnam Peace Accord". Today, January 28th, (1973), the US-Vietnam "Cease Fire" took effect. Not long after that occurred, Thomaston received evac orders to participate in Operations "Eagle Pull" and "Frequent Wind". Job well done to all..

I took the T across the pond in very early March of 1968. You were transporting my tank company from Camp Pendleton, California to Da Nang, Vietnam. During that crossing the ship's bell was discovered down on the Well Deck after the tanks left. Does anyone remember the incident? We left it behind instead of stealing it after it was announced that everything was going to be searched until it was found. It had to be known by the crew. Cab anyone help me?

I am the Historian of the USS McCaffery (DD 860)Shipmates' Association. CAPT Alan Hodge was C.O. of both McCaffery and Thomaston. CAPT Hodge's widow has contacted me regarding a painting that was painted by a member of Thomaston while he was its C.O. with the ship in the background. She is looking to donate it. Can someone put me in contact with your President or Historian?

I know a lot of y’all don’t have great memories of me. I was Bipolar 1 and one very annoying guy. But you put up with me for 2 Westpacs and for that I’m grateful. I was aboard from 76-81. Went to NAVCAMSMED for three years and then got out. I finally got treatment and I really enjoy life. I have multiple myeloma cancer and had a stem cell transplant last October. Thanks Dr. Joe Paredes for your encouragement. I’m told I look like Uncle Fester when I don’t have hair. My info is all here. Feel free to call or drop me a line. I’m on Facebook. I lost my little brother in 94. This year I lost my brother-in-law. Died in my sisters arms. Dad died at 86 in April. We lost my nieces mother and father-in-law within a week of each other. Been a rough start to the year. Monday I have a meeting with my oncologist to find out if my cancer’s still gone. I try to stay humble and kind.

Just found this site..I've been wondering if something like this existed. I came on board at Todd's shipyard in '78 and left via medical hold February '81. I ended up being the Oil King after the "fiasco"... The 79-80 cruise book has me and Sheirbeck backwards. I do shirt printing at events and I am doing a veterans event next week. I thought I would make a USS Thomaston shirt which is how I found this site. I saw a few names posted that I remembered. Memories...
