Hello to all of those I served with. Was onboard assigned to the "A" division from 1974 to 1976. Managed to install air conditioning in the Marine, Beach Masters and Sea Bees berthing areas before departing for Subic and then to the evacs of Cambodia and South Viet Nam. Taught a young HT how to patrol and maintain civil behavior as a shore patrolman in Hong Kong and Subic Bay. Fun times. Primary assignment was all shipboard air conditioning, refrigeration, cranes, after steering, ships anchor windlass and the only fire pump that kept the ship moving from port to port, the forward emergency fire pump. The guys in engineering during that time know what I am talking about. Helped to install the new shipboard entertainment system that televised ships movies, slides and daily news updates. Missed the ship and my ship-mates when I had to leave. It was a great experience. Thanks to all for your friendship.

The USS Thomaston LSD-28 is about to be sold as scrap ! We need your help, please click on the 'home' tab to read more about it and download the form letter.

The most effective method at this point would be for former crew member to send letters, especially via email to their own Federal legislators.

Time is short, we need your help now !

Thanks !

I served aboard the Thomaston from 3/64 - 3/66 as a Deck Officer and finally the Weapons Officer. I left the ship to volunteer for duty in Vietnam (Operation Game Warden). Fortunately, I survived that and taking in the third wave in the landing at Chu Lai, RVN. My best to my old ship mates. Those two years were fantastic, and my memories are remembered fondly - especially Olongapo.

I just returned from a month long dive trip to PI where I visited Subic and Grande island for the 1st time since the early 70's

Photos will be posted soon here on the Thomaston website.

The last remaining bar from my days is the American Legion Post where I visited on this trip and enjoyed a couple of cold brews with some old timers.

Hey Guys, For anyone who was on the Tommy in April 1975 is entitled to receive the Vietnam Service Medal. Can't list the site on this message board, but look it up or email me.
Maybe I'm the last to know about this but the Tommy was awarded 2 Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals. One for Operation Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. Frequent Wind is the LAST Operation of the Vietnam War and you can exchange one of the AFEM medals for a VSM.
Hope all is well. "Doc" from 74-76

Hello! Thank you all for your service!
I am helping my daughter (age 10) research the changes in Naval Warfare/Ships from Revolutionary times to present day.
My brother Seaman Apprentice Richard P. Caputo, served aboard your ship in 1978. He passed away that year...and it has been a real pleasure viewing this website and getting a glimpse of his "home away from home"...even some of the men with whom he served that year! Thank you for sharing these photos with us! I would love to hear from anyone who might have served with my brother!
We appreciate all you do for our nation!
