I spent my 27th birthday aboard the Thomaston in the South China Sea. I was an embark Marine with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines serving in training ops with the ROK Marines off the coast of South Korea in 1982. Always enjoyed my time on Navy ships, and the Thomaston was no exception. Cramped Quarters, but good chow, and plenty of it.

Just kinda stumbled across the site...awesome job. See a lot of old shipmates I served with on the Tommy-T from 1980 to 1984. Still talk regularly with Jim Parks. If anyone one knows what or where Michael Strehle ended up...drop me a line or have him get in touch. I remember when when the goofball ran us aground off Kuai, I believe we imortalized that morning muster with a big black square in the cruisebooke with the caption "morning Muster". Aynway....anyone out there, feel free to call or drop a line and we'll relive the good "ole" days.

I was a Marine with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines aboard the Thomaston in 1964 when the dredge's were brought to Saigon. I recall that all Marines were sent to the port side wing wall aft late at night with pails to bale out the ship. We weren't needed but I thought that we sure couldn't do much with a pail.
I landed in Vietnam with the 1st Marines about the USS Monticello LSD-35 in Jan. of 66. I was on 15 different ships in my 4 1/2 years in the Corps and I wasn't a Sea Going Marine just a grunt.
"Semper Fi" to all Navy personel who made this possible.
