I was aboard between 1981-1982. She was getting in pretty bad shape at that time. We were fixing on her all the time.
When I got out of the Navy, I went to work for a scrap yard. Welding, metal cutting, and than crane operator.
In 1990 I opened my own recycling center(fancy name for scrap yard).
I didn't think of looking up the USS thomaston LSD 28 on the internet till now. I was looking for pictures to show my son. He's thinking about joining the Navy.

I spent my 27th birthday aboard the Thomaston in the South China Sea. I was an embark Marine with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines serving in training ops with the ROK Marines off the coast of South Korea in 1982. Always enjoyed my time on Navy ships, and the Thomaston was no exception. Cramped Quarters, but good chow, and plenty of it.

Just kinda stumbled across the site...awesome job. See a lot of old shipmates I served with on the Tommy-T from 1980 to 1984. Still talk regularly with Jim Parks. If anyone one knows what or where Michael Strehle ended up...drop me a line or have him get in touch. I remember when when the goofball ran us aground off Kuai, I believe we imortalized that morning muster with a big black square in the cruisebooke with the caption "morning Muster". Aynway....anyone out there, feel free to call or drop a line and we'll relive the good "ole" days.
