I was a Marine with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines aboard the Thomaston in 1964 when the dredge's were brought to Saigon. I recall that all Marines were sent to the port side wing wall aft late at night with pails to bale out the ship. We weren't needed but I thought that we sure couldn't do much with a pail.
I landed in Vietnam with the 1st Marines about the USS Monticello LSD-35 in Jan. of 66. I was on 15 different ships in my 4 1/2 years in the Corps and I wasn't a Sea Going Marine just a grunt.
"Semper Fi" to all Navy personel who made this possible.

I sailed on the Thomaston from Okinawa to Korea for TeamSpirit '84. She was the first (but not the last!) naval vessel upon which I was copiously sea sick. We unloaded ammo in Chin Hae, my very first liberty port. Good crew, good ship!

Served onboard from 82-84, and was part of the decommissioning crew. I also was onboard that fateful night that the Capt. came onboard drunk and then proceeded to run us aground as we exited the ammo depot in Hawaii. We then crossed the Pacific with our ballast tanks flooding, constantly pumping them. We ended up spending almost 3 months in drydocks at Subic Bay. Man, what a time we had there.....like previous postings by others, we were actually glad to leave there after having WAY TOO MUCH fun. I am looking for other brothers from my timeframe who remember me, write or call me if you see this and have the time.

I served on the USS Thomaston LSD 28 for a period of three or four months. I will never forget the hard training aboard ship, during the Cuba thing in 1962. I was a SKSN, but was placed on the deck division. Each day aboard ship, I requested a transfer to the supply division but was never excepted. Aboard ship I ran across my Aunts brother in Texas. That was something to run across him in the middle of the ocean. Once the Operation was over, we were put in a island and to this day I don't know the name of it. We were told we could drink as much as we could, and they would bring us back safe and sound to the ship to sleep it off. I didn't even know we had liquior aboard the ship.
After spending almost 10 months overseas on another ship and another four months at sea with the Thomaston, I was ready for this. In total I almost spend a year at sea, and I needed some R and R. being on that island took some the pain from the sea, for a while, until the ship headed home, roberto garza, SKSN

Was in the PI when drydocked because drunk Captain ran her aground in Hawaii prior to Okinawa embark. Remember crazy Captain putting all of us in hack in Hong Kong because he was upset with the crew. Remember the incident in Manila when one of my Marines was hurt in a bar fight. My compliments to the Ward Room cooks!
